Wellington Barracks was built in 1845. It can be seen on the
first Ordnance Survey map of 1850 surrounded by fields and located alongside
what is now the A58 Bolton Road.

The plan was based on a square parade ground with accommodation blocks on all four sides. The main entrance was from the main road alongside the southern block. This was via a large archway in the centre of this block. The following photo shows this entrance in 1902.

The building at the top right of the above photo became the Regimental Headquarters. It is all that is left of the main buildings and is now and office complex. This can be seen from the roadside and is sown in the following photograph.

With the successive increase in the population of Bury over the decades the encroachment of the suburbs up to and beyond the Barracks can be seen. However the Barracks remained relatively the same in size and layout.

Finally the Barracks got overtaken by the suburbs and then after demolition in 1969 the land was used to build a small housing estate. This can be seen on the following aerial view.
